SpaceX Considers Buying Boost Mobile to Broaden Its Cellular Reach

SpaceX, the aerospace company famed for its Falcon rockets and the Starlink satellite internet system, is said to be negotiating a purchase of Boost Mobile, the budget wireless provider that belongs to Dish Network.

According to industry insiders, the deal would hand SpaceX an existing array of cell towers and spectrum licenses—resources that could augment its satellite broadband platform. Merging Boost’s ground‑based infrastructure with Starlink, SpaceX aims to launch a hybrid offering that could compete with the entrenched U.S. operators AT&T, T‑Mobile and Verizon.

Since Dish acquired Boost Mobile in 2020, the carrier has found it difficult to retain market share, yet it carries roughly 10 million customers and holds spectrum in the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands. Those bands are prized for 5G rollouts and could allow SpaceX to provide high‑speed connectivity in cities where satellite latency and reach are less favorable.

Analysts observe that SpaceX has been looking for ways to monetize Starlink beyond home broadband, pitching services for maritime, aviation and business sectors. A joint satellite‑cellular product would tackle a persistent critique of satellite internet—its poor penetration in dense urban settings and indoor spaces.

Gaining regulatory clearance will be a major obstacle, since the Federal Communications Commission must examine the deal for antitrust issues. Should approval be granted, the purchase could alter the market dynamics, compelling the Big Three telecoms to face a newcomer that merges space‑based and terrestrial technologies. The transaction is slated for a possible announcement later this year, although neither side has confirmed a formal offer.
