Microsoft Stops Supporting Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro, Advises Users to Upgrade

Microsoft disclosed today that support for the Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions has officially ended, so the operating system will no longer receive its monthly security updates or preview builds that address non‑security issues.

The 24H2 update, released in the latter half of 2022, is part of Microsoft’s “Windows as a Service” approach where feature upgrades are supplied continuously rather than via large, standalone OS releases. It brought a suite of visual tweaks, performance enhancements, and new productivity utilities that expanded on the core Windows 11 platform first launched in 2021.

According to Microsoft’s stated lifecycle policy, Home and Pro versions receive support for 24 months after a feature update becomes generally available. After that interval, only Enterprise and Education editions retain extended support for as long as three years. The 24H2 Home and Pro builds have now exceeded that 24‑month timeframe, triggering the halt of all regular updates.

This cessation has tangible implications for both individual users and businesses. Machines that stay on the now‑unsupported version will miss the monthly security patches that mitigate newly uncovered vulnerabilities, leaving them more vulnerable to malware and other threats. For organizations, operating an outdated OS can also compromise regulatory compliance and raise the likelihood of data breaches.

Microsoft urges users to move to the newest Windows 11 build promptly, either through the built‑in Windows Update utility or, for larger rollouts, via the company’s enterprise‑grade deployment solutions. IT teams should review their device inventories, give priority to upgrading critical systems, and inform end users of the change to prevent service interruptions.

Retiring support for a particular Windows version is a standard element of Microsoft’s update rhythm, yet it underscores the need to stay aligned with the OS lifecycle. As newer feature releases continue to appear, devices that remain current will enjoy the latest security fixes, performance gains, and feature additions that Microsoft keeps delivering.
