Meta to Halt Major OS Updates for Quest 2 and Pro by 2027

Meta disclosed today that it will cease providing full OS updates for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro VR headsets, with the last release—version 213—set for March 2027.

This ends a six‑year support span for the Quest 2, introduced in 2020, and a five‑year span for the Pro, which arrived in 2022. During those years, the headsets received periodic OS upgrades that introduced hand‑tracking, mixed‑reality passthrough and various performance improvements.

Even though Meta will stop rolling out new feature updates after v213, it affirmed that security patches and essential bug fixes will keep being issued for an as‑yet‑undetermined period, a typical approach among hardware vendors to protect users from new vulnerabilities.

Analysts read the move as evidence that Meta is shifting its development focus to newer devices, such as the Quest 3 launched last year, and upcoming models that are expected to feature stronger processors and higher‑resolution screens.

The notice gives Quest 2 and Pro owners cause for worry regarding the long‑term worth of their gear. Although the headsets will keep functioning, the absence of further feature updates may restrict compatibility with future VR apps that depend on newer OS functions.

Developers will probably revise their roadmaps too. Numerous indie studios have crafted games atop the Quest platform’s software stack, and they may have to focus on newer headsets to leverage the latest SDKs and performance enhancements.

The wider VR market is reaching maturity, facing competition from other makers and growing consumer demand for smooth, up‑to‑date experiences. Meta’s support schedule mirrors industry standards, where flagship units usually get major updates for three to five years before retirement.

Meta did not disclose the exact duration of future security updates, yet its track record of patching older hardware hints at a limited, continued effort. Users are urged to keep their devices up to date until the March 2027 cutoff.

The cessation of OS updates for the Quest 2 and Pro highlights the swift pace of immersive tech and indicates that Meta’s next VR phase will center on newer headsets, greater fidelity, and tighter alignment with its broader metaverse goals.
