Armed Attackers Beat Homeowner, Menace Unborn Child in Cryptocurrency Robbery
Police said a man was brutally assaulted inside his home and compelled to hand over his cryptocurrency after attackers threatened to kill the unborn child of his pregnant wife.
The intruders broke in wielding hammers, beating the victim repeatedly until he yielded. Pressured by the assault, he sent cryptocurrency valued at several hundred thousand pounds to accounts owned by the robbers, who subsequently escaped.
Officials pointed to the case as another example of the rising tide of crypto‑focused thefts, in which offenders take advantage of the anonymity and rapid transfer of digital currencies to extort payments. These offenses typically rely on threats, allowing criminals to sidestep conventional banking protections and seize money straight from victims' wallets.
A criminal probe has been opened, with police asking anyone with tips to step forward. They also cautioned that crypto transfers cannot be reversed and advised holders to use strong safeguards like hardware wallets and multi‑factor authentication to secure their funds.
Should they be caught, the suspects may be charged with serious offences such as aggravated assault and extortion. The incident highlights the necessity for enhanced police capacity to combat cyber‑enabled robberies and fuels worries about the protection of people possessing significant digital wealth.
