Apple Says Hardware Issue Causes SOS Mode on AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max Phones

Apple has formally confirmed that a portion of iPhone 18 Pro Max devices sold to AT&T customers are inadvertently entering SOS mode, which disables regular cellular service and limits the phone to emergency calls only.

The problem was first brought to light when users observed their phones repeatedly showing the SOS icon even though an AT&T signal was present. Because software updates have failed to fix the behavior, both Apple and the carrier have begun probing the hardware as the likely cause.

In a press release, Apple labeled the flaw as a "hardware‑related anomaly" affecting the modem of certain iPhone 18 Pro Max units. It said it has pinpointed the relevant serial‑number range and will provide a complimentary replacement to any AT&T subscriber whose handset falls within that series. Apple stressed that the replacement will be a brand‑new iPhone 18 Pro Max rather than a repair, to ensure a quick fix for affected users.

AT&T corroborated Apple’s assessment, stating the issue is not linked to its network settings but to the device itself. The carrier is guiding qualifying customers to a dedicated support portal where they can enter their phone’s IMEI to check eligibility. Those who qualify will receive instructions for mailing their device and obtaining a replacement, with AT&T covering any shipping fees.

The situation echoes previous instances in which Apple introduced repair programs for specific iPhone models, such as the 2022 battery‑performance slowdown controversy and the 2023 camera‑focus glitch. Although hardware defects are uncommon in Apple’s tightly controlled supply chain, the company’s swift action seeks to minimize disruption for users and uphold confidence in its premium brand.

Neither Apple nor AT&T has provided a full timeline for the replacement rollout, but both parties noted that replacement units are already on their way to distribution centers. Customers are urged to back up their data before sending in their phones and to keep an eye on Apple’s support site for further updates. As the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains a flagship product for the holiday season, handling the issue promptly is vital for sustaining sales momentum and consumer trust.
