Apple Rolls Out Fresh Disclosure Requirement for Dating and AI Companion Applications
Apple said that creators of applications that enable romantic matchmaking must now indicate if their service links actual people, artificial-intelligence agents, or a combination of the two, allowing the firm to apply suitable age classifications.
This amendment broadens the current App Store rating system, which already categorises apps for violence, gambling and sexual content. Introducing a separate tier for dating and AI companionship is intended to provide parents and caretakers with more transparent guidance.
The rule comes at a time when AI-generated personas and chatbots are increasingly appearing in social and dating platforms. Detractors caution that youngsters might encounter encounters that obscure the distinction between genuine human bonds and algorithmic simulations, sparking worries over privacy and consent.
Developers must revise their app metadata in the App Store Connect dashboard to state the type of connections their offering provides. Supplying incorrect details may lead to the app’s removal or a reassignment to a stricter age rating, reducing its storefront visibility.
Analysts suggest the mandate may compel dating services to disclose AI involvement more openly and could trigger a reassessment of age-verification practices. Apple has not revealed an exact enforcement date, but anticipates compliance ahead of the upcoming quarterly review period.
