Apple Adds Customizable CarPlay Widgets for Faster, Safer Access
Apple introduced a fresh suite of widget features for CarPlay, enabling drivers to view essential information at a glance. This expansion widens the selection of apps that can display content on a car’s infotainment display, even if those apps do not have full CarPlay support.
To place a widget, users simply press and hold the CarPlay home screen, then tap the plus icon that appears in the upper‑right corner. From the menu that follows they can scroll through the list of available widgets, pick the desired size, and drag it into an empty slot. The workflow mirrors how iPhone home‑screen widgets are arranged, making the transition intuitive for iOS users.
Beyond mere placement, drivers may choose compact, medium, or large formats based on how much detail they want to see instantly. Apple’s guidelines urge developers to craft widgets that convey core data—such as weather, calendar events, or music playback—without requiring interaction. At present the system supports widgets from a variety of third‑party services, including messaging, navigation and media applications.
The change matters because many popular apps lack dedicated CarPlay interfaces. By exposing widget versions, Apple gives users a way to stay informed without swapping apps or diverting eyes from the road. For example, a messaging app can show unread counts, while a fitness tracker can display step totals, all directly on the dashboard.
Safety advocates point out that the glance‑friendly design aligns with industry efforts to curb driver distraction. Apple’s widget framework restricts interaction to tap‑or‑hold actions, avoiding complex menus that could pull attention away from driving. Consistent visual styling across apps also helps drivers build quick mental models of where information resides.
Looking forward, Apple is expected to fine‑tune the widget ecosystem with additional size options and tighter integration with Siri and Shortcuts. Developers have been urged to submit widget updates through the standard App Store process, indicating that the pool of available widgets will expand over time. As more apps adopt the format, CarPlay could evolve into a more versatile hub for real‑time data, further solidifying its place in modern vehicle infotainment.
