Xbox Series S Still Serves as the Affordable Gateway to Next‑Gen Gaming

While prices for gaming consoles have generally climbed, Microsoft’s Xbox Series S still presents a substantially cheaper entry point compared with its more robust counterpart, the Series X. This price disparity remains even though both consoles recently received the same price changes that have impacted most next‑gen hardware.

This gap is largely due to the Series S’s stripped‑back specs. It drops the Series X’s 4K‑ready GPU in favor of a weaker graphics chip aimed at 1440p output. RAM falls from 16 GB to 10 GB, and storage shrinks from 1 TB to 512 GB, while the disc drive is omitted entirely. Such component reductions lower production expenses, letting Microsoft sell the compact unit at about half the cost of the top‑tier model.

Supply‑chain strains—like chip shortages and higher shipping fees—that have pushed component costs up hit both consoles in the same way. Yet, since the Series S incorporates fewer premium chips, its manufacturing cost climbs more slowly, keeping it cheaper than the Series X.

Microsoft markets the Series S as a “digital‑first” console for players who value affordability and ease of use above sheer power. By courting price‑sensitive buyers, the firm grows its ecosystem, promotes services such as Xbox Game Pass, and boosts its market share. This approach reflects a wider industry pattern of offering tiered hardware to serve both high‑end and entry‑level audiences.

Analysts point out that the Series S’s cheaper price also acts as a counter‑move to Sony’s PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which, despite also lacking a disc drive, is priced higher than Microsoft’s budget option. This price gap may sway households planning an upgrade without a large spend.

Going forward, the enduring price difference hints that Microsoft will keep backing the Series S with patches and new games, keeping it a functional entry point to next‑gen titles. As the gaming sector adjusts to inflation, the Series S demonstrates how makers can juggle cost limits while meeting the appetite for contemporary gaming.
