WhatsApp introduces shareable event links for non‑app users

WhatsApp is broadening its event‑planning features, now permitting users to distribute invitation links to individuals who haven’t installed the messenger. When setting up an event, the host can create a shareable URL that can be copied and forwarded via email, SMS or any other medium.

In contrast to the current event function, which demands every participant be on WhatsApp, the link operates for anyone with a web browser. Recipients may inspect the event information, RSVP, and follow updates without installing the app, reducing obstacles to group coordination.

This launch is part of Meta’s wider strategy to keep WhatsApp competitive with rivals like Telegram and Signal, which already allow cross‑platform group and channel invitations. By making it easier to add new participants to a conversation, the firm aims to keep current users and draw occasional users who might otherwise migrate to other services for event organization.

Privacy groups warn that the feature might pose data‑exposure risks, as a public URL could be shared beyond the intended group. WhatsApp counters that each link is event‑specific, can be cancelled by the organizer at any moment, and that all messages stay end‑to‑end encrypted for users on the app.

Analysts interpret the change as a reaction to user criticism that the present event workflow feels restrictive. Small businesses, families and community groups have frequently found it difficult to organize meet‑ups when not all members run WhatsApp. The link‑based invitations are intended to simplify those exchanges while preserving the core messaging experience.

The capability is being introduced incrementally over the next weeks, first to Android and iOS users in select regions before a worldwide launch. As it rolls out, observers will monitor adoption speed and its impact on the platform’s overall engagement figures.
