A recent cross‑disciplinary study of ancient DNA extracted from human bones in China's Gansu province shows that western agricultural methods arrived without a substantial wave of newcomers. The genetic profiles of the individuals examined stay closely tied to indigenous groups, implying that farming knowledge spread mainly through cultural contact.

The team integrated genome sequencing of skeletal remains dating to the Neolithic and early Bronze Age with archaeological evaluations of burial contexts and isotopic diet analyses. DNA results indicate uninterrupted maternal and paternal lineages throughout the period, whereas the artefacts—like stone implements and pottery designs—display unmistakable western Eurasian farming influences.

These results call into question the traditional demic diffusion hypothesis, which argues that agriculture expanded across Eurasia primarily via large-scale migrations of farming peoples. Instead, the evidence favours a model where local hunter‑gatherers incorporated cultivated crops and related technologies through trade links and direct interaction.

Situated along the historic Hexi Corridor, Gansu has long acted as a bridge between the Chinese interior and the Central Asian steppes. Its strategic location rendered it a natural crossroads for varied populations during the Neolithic, and the new data add nuance to our view of how ideas and commodities traversed this region.

Grave examinations further highlight this cultural melding. Certain tombs contain typical western Eurasian grave items, while others preserve native ritual features, pointing to a slow blending of external influences rather than an abrupt cultural overhaul.

By proving that farming expertise could disseminate without accompanying population turnover, the study reshapes our perception of early socioeconomic shifts in East Asia. It also echoes recent work from other marginal areas that stress the significance of exchange networks in the diffusion of agriculture.

The researchers stress that broader sampling from adjacent provinces and tighter radiocarbon dating are required to pinpoint the precise pathways and chronology of these contacts. Nonetheless, the present findings highlight the value of interdisciplinary methods in piecing together prehistoric human dynamics.
