Waymo Restarts San Antonio Robotaxi Service After Flood-Related Interruption

On Monday, Waymo said its self‑driving vehicle service in San Antonio has resumed operations, ending a five‑month shutdown that began after a heavy flood carried one of its robotaxis downstream in April.

The outage started when intense rain triggered flash floods along the River Walk corridor—a primary pathway for the fleet. A driverless car was swept downstream, incurred severe damage, and forced Waymo to suspend all rides while safety procedures were reviewed and the damaged vehicle repaired.

Throughout the pause, Waymo collaborated with city officials, the Texas Department of Transportation and its engineering staff to investigate the event and bolster the system’s durability against extreme weather. Authorities noted that the assessment resulted in enhanced waterproofing for the cars’ electronics and updated routing software that avoids flood‑susceptible streets during severe storms.

The comeback in San Antonio comes as Waymo expands its robotaxi program to multiple U.S. cities, contending with other autonomous and ride‑hailing services. Since its debut in late 2023, the San Antonio deployment has served as a proving ground for the company's newest software release, featuring upgraded perception sensors and a stronger safety architecture.

Analysts see the resumption as an encouraging sign for the autonomous‑driving industry, emphasizing that a swift rebound from a high‑profile mishap reflects operational maturity. Waymo has not revealed the precise count of active vehicles, but it said service capacity will be scaled up gradually as demand picks up.
