Ukraine outfits Humvees with add‑on remote‑drive kits linked via Starlink
Drone Fight Group, a Ukrainian defence contractor, delivered three Humvees equipped with its Kaban remote‑control system, converting the ordinary tactical vehicle into a satellite‑linked, unmanned platform for Ukraine’s forces.
The Kaban package can be mounted onto the Humvee without modifying its structure, simply bolting onto the pre‑existing attachment points. This method enables crews to toggle rapidly between traditional manual driving and remote operation, keeping the vehicle’s baseline capabilities intact while introducing an additional mode.
The altered Humvees are commanded via SpaceX’s Starlink broadband service, which delivers low‑latency, high‑throughput connectivity throughout the combat zone. This allows operators to stay safely behind friendly lines while piloting the vehicle in real time, relying on the sturdy satellite link to send commands and obtain video feeds.
The shipment illustrates a wider pattern in Ukraine’s war effort, in which off‑the‑shelf commercial tech is repurposed for combat. Whether it’s ready‑made drones or counter‑drone gear, Ukrainian troops have progressively converted civilian‑grade equipment into weapons, and the driverless Humvee adds another layer to this improvisation.
Eliminating a human driver from the Humvee’s cockpit seeks to lower the risk from small‑arms fire, IEDs and ambushes in contested city or countryside areas. The capacity to perform scouting, move cargo or act as a weapons platform without crew presence may shift tactical assessments on the battlefield.
Although only three units compose the first trial batch, officials say that gathered performance data will inform any decision to expand the program. Should the remote‑control system demonstrate reliability in combat, it could be installed on larger fleets or modified for other vehicle classes.
