UAE and Saudi Arabia Responsible for Half of Gulf Cyber Incidents in First Half of 2026

According to Dark Reading, the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia accounted for half of every cyber incident recorded in the Gulf region in the first six months of 2026, highlighting an increasing focus of digital threats on the peninsula.

Both economies have fast‑tracked digital transformation in recent years, adopting cloud platforms, smart‑city solutions and automated oil‑and‑gas systems. While this rapid modernization raises efficiency, it also widens the attack surface for malicious actors targeting valuable assets and data.

Analysts observe that Gulf‑focused attacks have grown considerably more sophisticated. Instead of basic phishing attempts, threat groups now launch multi‑vector operations that blend zero‑day exploits, supply‑chain breaches and ransomware payloads engineered to bypass conventional security defenses. Such complexity points to well‑funded actors, potentially state‑sponsored, capable of customizing tactics to the region’s unique infrastructure.

In reaction, the two governments have intensified their cybersecurity initiatives. Measures include creating joint cyber‑defense centers, boosting funding for threat‑intelligence sharing, and tightening regulatory obligations for operators of critical infrastructure. Private‑sector collaborators are also being urged to deploy advanced detection solutions and carry out regular red‑team exercises to assess resilience.

Looking forward, experts warn that the upward trajectory of attacks is unlikely to abate without ongoing collaboration. Regional coordination, investment in a skilled cyber workforce, and the adoption of emerging defensive technologies will be essential to curb future risks and safeguard the Gulf’s economic lifelines.
