Swiss Milk Contains Tire‑Derived Rubber Traces, Study Shows
A recent scientific analysis has identified trace amounts of chemicals linked to tire wear in milk from Swiss dairy farms, underscoring a previously overlooked route for rubber pollutants to reach the human food chain.
Scientists estimate that about six million tonnes of rubber particles are emitted worldwide each year from vehicle tires and road surfaces. These minute fragments travel through the air, are washed into rivers, and can settle in soils, particularly where farms lie adjacent to busy roads or receive runoff‑laden irrigation.
The Swiss investigation found that milk samples taken from farms located within a few kilometres of major highways contained measurable levels of the same polymer‑based substances that stem from tire degradation. Researchers tied the presence of these compounds to the closeness of dairy operations to traffic corridors and to the use of fertilisers that may deposit airborne particles onto grazing fields.
The results add to a growing body of evidence that road‑derived pollutants are not confined to soil and water but can also be transferred to livestock via feed and pasture. Although the detected concentrations are low, the research community stresses the need for continued monitoring to evaluate any possible health impacts for consumers and to guide agricultural best practices.
Regulators in Switzerland and across Europe are now reviewing the data to decide whether current food‑safety standards should be revised. Scientists also propose mitigation measures—such as vegetative buffer strips, improved runoff management, and alternative road‑wear materials—to curb the movement of rubber particles from highways onto farmlands, thereby limiting their entry into dairy products.
