A collaborative initiative involving multiple universities and municipal agencies is now underway to assess if any animal species yet undocumented by science are flourishing among New York City’s skyscrapers and subway tunnels.

Global biodiversity catalogs remain incomplete; researchers calculate that a large proportion of species—especially tiny invertebrates and microbes—have yet to be described. Historically, most novel finds arise from isolated forests, abyssal seas, or poorly surveyed tropical zones, prompting the belief that a crowded metropolis provides little opportunity for true novelty.

To challenge that notion, researchers are employing an array of contemporary techniques. They are gathering environmental DNA (eDNA) from storm‑drain water, park soils, and rooftop gardens, which lets them identify genetic signatures of organisms without physical capture. Simultaneously, motion‑triggered cameras and sound recorders have been installed in parks, subway tunnels, and even vacant structures to capture wildlife that would otherwise remain hidden.

City habitats pose distinct obstacles for these investigations. Fragmented patches are diminutive and heavily altered, and the overwhelming human presence can drown out faint indications of rare or cryptic species. Still, prior work provides examples: recent research has revealed previously unknown insect and fungal groups in other large cities, indicating that urban ecosystems may conceal undiscovered diversity.

Should a novel species be verified inside New York’s boundaries, the discovery would carry broad ramifications. It would trigger a reevaluation of biodiversity distribution across human‑dominated terrains and could affect municipal planning, conservation budgets, and the public’s view of urban nature.

The initiative is currently moving into an intensive data‑analysis stage, as taxonomists match DNA sequences to worldwide databases and field biologists sift through extensive video footage. Collaborations with neighborhood groups are also growing, inviting residents to contribute sightings and samples, which expands the geographic scope of the investigation.

Although the probability of finding an entirely new vertebrate within the city is low, scientists emphasize that the project itself underscores a key scientific tenet: even the most familiar settings can produce surprising revelations when approached with novel techniques and open curiosity.
