Researchers Conduct Alpine Fungi Survey on Norway's Dryas Heath, Seeking Undescribed Species
During a focused field expedition in August, a group of mycologists began an intensive survey of the alpine Dryas heath across Norway’s mountains, aiming to catalogue the local fungal community and to record species that have yet to be formally described.
The Dryas heath— a thin mat of dwarf shrubs adhering to rocky, wind‑blasted slopes above the treeline— exemplifies an Arctic‑alpine ecosystem. Its severe climate and brief growing period have left much of its microscopic fauna understudied, even though the environment is crucial for soil development and nutrient cycling.
The team combines classic and cutting‑edge methods: systematic transect walks to find fruiting bodies, gathering soil and litter specimens, and conducting rapid DNA barcoding in a field‑portable lab. Their schedule coincides with the short late‑summer window when numerous fungi produce visible mushrooms, allowing on‑site identification.
Grasping the concealed diversity of these fungi matters for more than scholarly interest. Fungal species are key agents in breaking down organic material, establishing symbioses with plants, and regulating carbon storage—processes that are particularly vulnerable to climate change in high‑latitude zones. Additionally, newly identified taxa could possess biochemical compounds valuable to medicine or industry.
Following the field campaign, the collected specimens will be curated in national herbaria, meticulously described, and cross‑checked with global databases.
