Redditor Uses AI to Run Switch Games Natively on Apple TV

A Redditor managed to harness an AI‑powered coding assistant to execute Nintendo Switch games directly on Apple TV, introducing a proof‑of‑concept dubbed TVPort.

TVPort depends on Claude Code, an AI‑based development tool, to produce the low‑level code that converts Switch game binaries into a tvOS‑compatible format. Supplying the model with exhaustive details about the Switch’s hardware interface and the Apple TV’s OS enabled the user to persuade it into creating a working bridge that runs the games without any emulation layer.

Since the Nintendo Switch and Apple TV both employ ARM‑based CPUs, some parts of the port become simpler. Yet the devices diverge significantly in OS, graphics APIs, and input management. The code produced by the AI bridges these differences by translating Switch‑specific system calls to tvOS counterparts, adjusting controller inputs, and rerouting the graphics pipeline to the Apple TV’s GPU architecture.

TVPort adds to an expanding roster of community‑led projects that exploit large language models to translate software between platforms. In recent months, comparable attempts have aimed to move Android applications onto desktop systems and to retrofit classic PC games for current consoles, all relying on AI coding assistants to speed up development that would otherwise demand labor‑intensive manual rewrites.

This milestone underscores both the technical potential and the legal gray area of cross‑platform game distribution. Although the AI‑generated bridge constitutes original code, the game assets it runs are still bound by Nintendo’s licensing restrictions. Consequently, the effort is presented as a proof‑of‑concept rather than a commercial distribution route, highlighting the friction between innovation and IP enforcement.

Going forward, TVPort’s success could motivate additional developers and hobbyists to explore AI‑aided ports, possibly widening the selection of games accessible on streaming boxes such as Apple TV. As code‑generation models advance, the obstacles to transplanting varied software ecosystems onto new hardware may shrink, urging platform owners to rethink the openness of their ecosystems to community‑driven adaptations.
