Philadelphia Resident Arrested for Obstructing Uber Eats Delivery Robot

Police said a Philadelphia woman was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after she intentionally blocked an Uber Eats autonomous delivery robot.

The confrontation happened on a bustling city block as the small, wheeled robot was moving along the sidewalk to drop off a food order. Approaching the robot, the woman—named Carolyn Marvin—refused to step aside, forcing the robot to halt and the encounter to intensify.

Marvin subsequently spoke to ABC13, saying her behavior was a protest, stating, "I know they're taking the jobs of human delivery workers and so, I have been protesting them…" The interview, captured soon after her detention, saw her reaffirming her stance against the technology, which she called a danger to conventional courier jobs.

Several U.S. cities have introduced delivery robots through pilot schemes intended to cut delivery times and labor expenses. Uber Eats started testing the units in Philadelphia earlier this year, pointing to safety capabilities and the capacity to function amid foot traffic without a driver.

Municipal leaders have largely supported the trials, emphasizing that the robots must obey city sidewalk rules and are fitted with sensors to dodge obstacles. Nonetheless, police officials warned that impeding a robot is treated similarly to blocking any other vehicle, resulting in charges like disorderly conduct when someone does not comply.

The incident contributes to the expanding debate over automation's effect on low‑wage employment and how cities will govern new technologies. Labor‑rights advocates claim stronger safeguards are required, whereas tech firms argue that robots augment rather than supplant human couriers. How Marvin’s case resolves may shape the handling of future demonstrations and prompt new ordinances governing pedestrian interactions with autonomous delivery machines.
