OpenAI said it will stop funding Caltech’s yearly “Mathathon” following a surge of criticism from mathematicians who claim the firm’s technologies have “destructive impacts” on the discipline.

The move comes after numerous public statements and open letters from prominent scholars who argue that large‑language models and automated theorem‑proving systems are changing research practices, possibly weakening conventional problem‑solving abilities and shifting academic incentives.

Caltech’s Mathathon—a three‑day contest that gathers undergraduate and graduate participants to address tough problems—has received OpenAI’s backing since 2021. The collaboration was initially presented as an opportunity to introduce promising students to state‑of‑the‑art AI tools while promoting responsible application of the technology in mathematical research.

Nevertheless, detractors caution that the very tools capable of speeding up discovery could also facilitate plagiarism, produce subpar proofs, and divert recognition from human insight. A petition signed by over 200 mathematicians urged institutions to reassess partnerships with AI companies, pointing to cases where AI‑produced solutions were claimed as original without adequate verification.

In a short statement, OpenAI expressed that it “respects the concerns raised by the mathematical community” and will “reassess how we engage with academic events to ensure our contributions align with the values of rigorous scholarship.” The company did not specify any particular alterations to its research platforms.

Caltech’s administration affirmed that the Mathathon will proceed without OpenAI’s funding, noting that the event has attracted alternative sponsors and that its fundamental educational purpose stays intact. Dr. Elaine Cheng, dean of the Division of Mathematics, stressed that “the competition is about fostering curiosity and collaboration, and we will adapt to maintain that spirit.”

The incident highlights a wider discussion in academia regarding the proper role of artificial intelligence in generating knowledge. Some scholars welcome AI as a complementary aid for conjecture formation and proof verification, while others warn that unrestrained use could erode methodological rigor.

Going forward, OpenAI and academic institutions are likely to enter discussions on transparent guidelines, attribution norms, and safeguards against misuse. The result could establish a benchmark for how technology firms collaborate with universities on niche programs, balancing innovation with the protection of scholarly integrity.
