Northampton Scuba Team Dedicates Six Hours to River Debris Removal

Members of the Northampton Scuba School joined forces with a group of local organisations to clean a section of the river, spending six hours on the task and pulling a sizable quantity of litter from the water.

Armed with scuba equipment and purpose‑built collection devices, the volunteers collaborated with community groups, environmental charities and municipal crews. In unison they recovered objects that spanned plastic bottles and fishing line to bigger pieces like abandoned nets and metal fragments, all previously caught in the riverbed and banks.

Across the United Kingdom, river pollution is an escalating issue, with runoff, illegal dumping and litter degrading habitats and endangering wildlife. Scuba divers are being enlisted more often for these missions, as they can reach underwater areas that are hard to access, enabling them to extract waste that would otherwise decompose and emit harmful micro‑plastics.

Local residents and officials lauded the clean‑up, pointing out that clearing the debris not only lifts the river’s visual appeal but also boosts water quality and safeguards aquatic life.
