Nolan’s ‘The Prestige’ to Return in IMAX Format
Warner Bros. disclosed that Christopher Nolan’s 2006 mystery drama The Prestige is slated for a limited IMAX re‑release later this year, joining an expanding lineup of the director’s films presented in the premium format.
Set in turn‑of‑the‑century London, the original film tracks competing stage magicians and features Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson. Its complex narrative and vivid visual aesthetic garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following, positioning it well for a high‑resolution showing.
IMAX presentations will offer a bigger, curved screen and sharper image quality—attributes Nolan has consistently advocated for in later blockbusters like Interstellar and Dunkirk. While The Prestige was originally captured on standard 35mm film, the upcoming version will be digitally remastered to suit the format’s greater pixel density and immersive audio.
This decision mirrors a wider industry pattern of re‑examining recent classics using upgraded technology, giving viewers the chance to enjoy known narratives anew. Nolan fans, in particular, will be able to view the director’s early work through the same visual framework employed for his newer spectacles.
Movie exhibitors are arranging special event showings, and the re‑release might lift theater attendance during an otherwise quiet season. Should audience reaction be robust, studios could pursue comparable upgrades for additional Nolan titles, further narrowing the gap between modern blockbusters and refreshed early‑2000s releases.
