Musk Accuses Reliance Mogul of Hindering Starlink's India Debut
Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX and its satellite internet division Starlink, has openly accused Indian industrial magnate Mukesh Ambani of slowing the service’s rollout in India, saying the Reliance group is leveraging its market power to suppress competition.
Starlink has been pursuing permission to operate in India for several years, navigating a regulatory framework that obliges foreign satellite operators to join forces with a domestic partner. In 2023, the firm disclosed a tie‑up with Reliance Jio, the telecommunications subsidiary of Ambani’s Reliance Industries, to satisfy the nation’s licensing rules.
Reliance Jio, already the country’s biggest mobile network provider, commands a sizable portion of India’s data and broadband sectors. Critics have warned that the alliance could grant the conglomerate an excessive edge, potentially curbing the entry of other foreign satellite services and concentrating revenue within the existing telecom ecosystem.
In a recent interview, Musk asserted that the holdup in Starlink’s launch was not a technical issue but the result of “deliberate obstruction” by Ambani, whom he said was “blocking competition.” The comments, cited by TechCrunch, highlight growing frustration at SpaceX over what it sees as an uneven playing field in one of the world’s fastest‑growing digital markets.
Indian authorities have not responded to Musk’s allegations, though the Department of Telecommunications is reviewing applications from multiple satellite operators amid calls for a more open broadband environment. The decision on Starlink’s pending licence could set a benchmark for how foreign satellite firms work with Indian partners and whether the government will impose tougher anti‑monopoly measures.
Analysts observe that the clash reflects wider frictions between global technology firms and home‑grown conglomerates in emerging economies. Should Starlink eventually obtain a launch licence, it could deliver lower‑cost, high‑speed internet to underserved areas, challenging Reliance Jio’s pricing dominance. Conversely, ongoing delays may preserve the current landscape, keeping India’s broadband market largely in the hands of incumbent players. The coming weeks will likely show whether Musk’s public criticism spurs regulatory action or deepens the impasse between the two corporate giants.
