Microsoft unites Forza studios into single development house

Microsoft revealed today that its two Forza development outfits, Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios, will be combined into a single studio as part of a wider Xbox reorganization. The decision unites the teams behind the open‑world Forza Horizon franchise and the simulation‑oriented Forza Motorsport series under one umbrella.

Playground Games, launched in 2010, built its reputation on Horizon’s sprawling, festival‑style racing environments, whereas Turn 10, created in 2001, has delivered the meticulously engineered Motorsport games that appeal to dedicated racing fans. Together, the two studios have helped elevate Forza into one of the console market’s most successful racing brands, issuing yearly titles that blend lifelike vehicle physics with high‑budget production.

This merger comes after a sweeping overhaul of Xbox’s gaming divisions announced earlier in the year, intended to streamline development pipelines and sharpen the focus on flagship experiences. By cutting administrative layers and consolidating leadership, Microsoft aims to speed up decision‑making and allocate resources more efficiently across its first‑party portfolio.

Under the new arrangement, the unified studio will place the Forza Horizon line, together with the forthcoming Fable title, at the forefront, signalling a strategic tilt toward open‑world, story‑driven games. Analysts point to Horizon’s robust sales and broader audience as a key factor, while the Motorsport franchise may adopt a slower release rhythm or eventually be folded into Horizon’s expansive world in later editions.

The consolidation does not mean the Motorsport name will disappear overnight, but it does indicate that Microsoft will weigh how to balance the series’ simulation heritage with Horizon’s commercial momentum. Players can anticipate ongoing support for current games as the merged team works on next‑gen releases that share technology and talent. As the Xbox ecosystem evolves, the combined Forza studio is set to present a more unified vision for racing titles, potentially shaping the genre’s future for years ahead.
