After reports of extensive Remote Desktop Services (RDS) failures emerged following Microsoft’s most recent security patch cycle, the company released an emergency collection of out‑of‑band updates for Windows.

Available on Tuesday, these emergency patches correct a regression that the May security updates introduced, which caused RDS connections on multiple Windows editions to terminate abruptly or fail to launch. The same package also remedies associated issues reported on some machines running the updates, namely instability in Hyper‑V virtual machines and USB audio device drop‑outs.

Microsoft’s security response team explained that the RDS malfunction originated from a modification in the OS’s handling of specific network‑stack tasks after the security patches were installed. Because internal testing missed this regression, Microsoft opted to publish the out‑of‑band updates outside its usual monthly schedule.

The company’s advisory urges enterprise administrators to give the emergency updates top priority, particularly for those overseeing remote workforces that depend heavily on RDS to reach internal apps. It warns that the defect can diminish productivity and, in certain instances, interrupt data access for users operating from home or other remote locations.

Beyond the RDS correction, the out‑of‑band bundle ships with drivers and system components that address the reported Hyper‑V instability and USB audio drop‑outs experienced by Windows 10 and Windows 11 users who applied the May security updates. Microsoft affirmed that these side issues trace back to the identical code alteration.

Although Microsoft has not revealed how many devices are impacted, the swift rollout of the emergency patches indicates a broad effect spanning consumer and enterprise settings. It advises users with automatic updates turned off to manually retrieve and install the patches via the Windows Update Catalog.

Analysts see the episode as a reminder of the challenges inherent in pushing large‑scale security updates across a varied OS ecosystem.
