iPhone Handoff Enables One Number to Move Between Two Devices, Backed by Major Carriers

Apple’s Handoff, a component of the Continuity family, permits a user to begin a call, text, email or other task on one iPhone and then pick it up on another device while retaining the same phone number. This proves especially handy for those who switch between a personal and a work iPhone, removing the need to manually forward calls or retype messages.

The handoff process creates a short‑range Bluetooth LE link between the two phones and routes the information over a common Wi‑Fi network. When an action starts on the first iPhone, iOS generates a handoff token that the second phone detects, displaying a banner that lets the user resume the activity with one tap.

Since the mechanism relies on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth rather than the cellular network, the handoff itself isn’t tied to any carrier. Nonetheless, carriers must support underlying iPhone capabilities such as Wi‑Fi calling, eSIM provisioning and smooth number portability for a truly frictionless experience. In the United States, the big carriers—Verizon, AT&T, T‑Mobile and newer eSIM‑first providers—have all confirmed Handoff compatibility and permit a single mobile number to be assigned to multiple devices via dual‑SIM or eSIM setups.

A comparable situation is unfolding abroad. Major European operators, several Asian carriers and an expanding group of Canadian providers have introduced the required eSIM and Wi‑Fi calling support, allowing iPhone owners in those regions to use Handoff without additional configuration. Smaller carriers lacking eSIM or Wi‑Fi calling may still enable pairing of two iPhones, but the handoff may be restricted to data‑only tasks such as Safari or Notes.

Likewise, a draft email started on one phone can be completed on the other, preserving the same cellular link and keeping the conversation continuous.
