Google Photos launches AI‑driven virtual closet for Android and iOS users

Google Photos broadens its AI‑powered "Clueless" capability, which automatically creates a virtual wardrobe from the pictures users have saved. Following a June‑only rollout on Android, the feature is now open to all users of the app on both Android and iOS.

It examines a person’s photo collection, detects garments and sorts them into groups like tops, bottoms, footwear and accessories. Afterward, users can peruse outfit options, pair items together, and get style recommendations produced by the underlying machine‑learning system.

The idea was initially shown as a prototype in early 2023, presented as a reaction to rising demand for AI‑aided personal organization. Using Google’s vast image‑recognition capabilities, the virtual wardrobe seeks to cut down the effort spent locating clothing and to spark fresh outfit ideas without requiring users to tag items manually.

Analysts observe that the launch comes as a number of rivals are testing comparable functions, ranging from niche fashion‑tech firms to big‑ticket phone makers that embed AI in camera software. Google’s edge is the sheer volume of photos it stores, offering a deep dataset to train the models behind the closet feature.

Privacy groups have queried the handling and storage of visual data. Google replies that processing is performed on the device whenever feasible and that personal pictures are not fed into the wider AI training set without clear permission. Users can also turn the feature off via the app’s settings.

Looking forward, Google suggests upcoming versions could add shopping links, seasonal picks, and tighter ties with other Google products like Calendar and Assistant. At present, the virtual wardrobe marks the newest phase in the company’s wider effort to weave generative AI into daily consumer tools.
