The notice cautioned that rapid progress in quantum computing may soon make today’s leading public‑key schemes—like RSA and elliptic‑curve cryptography—obsolete, leaving everything from banking transfers to governmental communications vulnerable to decryption.

It proposes a concrete roadmap: entities ought to catalogue their current cryptographic assets, set migration schedules, trial quantum‑resistant algorithms in low‑risk settings, and work with vendors to verify compatibility with forthcoming standards.

These suggestions mirror the multi‑year initiative spearheaded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which has already shortlisted multiple candidate algorithms for standardization and aims to release definitive guidance within the coming year. Prominent tech companies have already started internal trials, indicating growing industry momentum.

Stakeholders in critical‑infrastructure, healthcare and finance are advised that early action can blunt the “harvest‑now, decrypt‑later” threat—where attackers hoard encrypted data now, awaiting future quantum capabilities to unlock it.

Going forward, the G7 intends to track developments, disseminate best‑practice frameworks, and explore coordinated policy steps to facilitate a seamless worldwide shift.
