Four Dead as Cyclone Isaias Brings Floods and Tornado Risks Across Southeast

The post‑tropical Cyclone Isaias that hit the Gulf Coast of Florida on Saturday is associated with a minimum of four deaths as it moved north across the southeastern United States, delivering a hazardous combination of intense rainfall, flash floods and possible tornadoes.

State emergency officials said the storm’s rain bands caused extensive flooding throughout coastal counties of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. In multiple spots, water surged fast enough to strand drivers and compel evacuations from low‑lying districts, leading rescue teams to wade in knee‑deep water to assist those trapped.

The verified fatalities consist of two people carried off by a swiftly rising creek in Georgia, an elderly resident who could not get out of a flooded house in South Carolina, and a construction laborer struck by a fallen tree in North Carolina. Officials say they have not excluded the possibility of more victims as search and recovery efforts proceed.

National Hurricane Center meteorologists cautioned that, despite losing its tropical cyclone status, Isaias still holds sufficient moisture to spawn isolated tornadoes. Small vortices have already touched down in central Florida, damaging roofs and power lines, and the risk stays high as the system moves further inland.

Municipal authorities have opened emergency shelters and advised citizens to steer clear of flooded roadways. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is keeping watch on the event, prepared to deliver help to any county that seeks federal support. Power firms are repairing outages caused by fallen poles, and the Army Corps of Engineers has sent extra assets to bolster levees and control river currents.

As Isaias travels farther inland, it is projected to weaken, yet forecasters warn its remnants may still dump a few more inches of rain in the next several days, pushing flood danger into the Mid‑Atlantic. The event highlights the escalating difficulties presented by post‑tropical storms that, even after shedding their tropical label, still bring life‑threatening hazards to extensive areas of the United States.
