Founder of Empire Market Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison

A federal court imposed a 40‑year jail term on Raheim Hamilton, the 30‑year‑old who co‑founded the now‑shuttered Empire Market, which had been among the most notable dark‑web drug sites in recent years.

Earlier this year Hamilton pleaded guilty to a drug‑conspiracy charge and, under the plea deal, agreed to forfeit over $100 million in Bitcoin plus several Virginia real‑estate holdings that investigators tied to the scheme.

Operating on the Tor network, Empire Market was famed for its broad inventory of illegal drugs and drew tens of thousands of users across the globe. At its height, the site processed transactions worth millions of dollars, using cryptocurrency to mask monetary flows.

The verdict comes after a joint law‑enforcement operation involving the FBI, DEA and overseas partners. In a coordinated raid, officials shut down the marketplace, apprehended multiple administrators and confiscated digital wallets containing substantial amounts of cryptocurrency.

Confiscating more than $100 million in Bitcoin represents one of the biggest crypto forfeitures linked to a darknet prosecution, highlighting investigators’ expanding capacity to track and seize digital assets. The action sends a stark warning that blockchain anonymity is becoming ever more constrained.

Although Hamilton’s conviction could discourage some prospective operators, analysts observe that the dark‑web landscape remains robust, with fresh sites constantly appearing. Still, the severe punishment demonstrates the U.S. justice system’s readiness to levy heavy sentences on individuals who enable extensive online drug trafficking, and it may shape forthcoming prosecutions as officials keep pursuing illegal crypto‑driven commerce.
