Flipkart Gives Employees Early Access to Its Food‑Delivery Platform Ahead of Public Launch, Walmart‑Backed Project Ramps Up
The Walmart‑owned Indian e‑commerce powerhouse Flipkart has discreetly started trialling its forthcoming food‑delivery service, opening it up to thousands of its employees, a step that underscores a determined entry into a sector led by Zomato and Swiggy.
Company insiders label the internal launch a beta, letting staff place orders via a prototype app and assess aspects such as restaurant choices and delivery speed. Restricting the test to its own workforce lets Flipkart fine‑tune logistics, pricing models and the overall user experience prior to a public debut.
Since its 2007 entry into India, Flipkart has become the nation’s biggest online retailer, a position reinforced when Walmart acquired a majority stake in 2018. This new food‑delivery division marks the retailer’s inaugural major expansion beyond its e‑commerce and fintech core, targeting a share of a market expected to top $15 billion in 2024.
Analysts observe that the move coincides with a wider trend of big tech companies seeking new revenue sources as growth in traditional online retail slows. Leveraging its current logistics infrastructure, merchant ties and extensive customer data, Flipkart aims to set its service apart with grocery‑to‑table integration and possibly reduced delivery charges.
Industry watchers warn that entering an already saturated market will demand more than logistical strength. Factors such as entrenched consumer loyalty to existing platforms, fierce discount wars, and regulations concerning food safety and gig‑worker rights could all influence Flipkart’s prospects.
Although Flipkart has yet to reveal a public launch timeline, the employee‑only trial hints that a wider release may occur in the coming months, depending on feedback from this internal test. Should the platform catch on, it could heighten competition, push rivals to upgrade their services, and possibly reshape India’s rapidly expanding food‑delivery arena.
