Female Group Members Share Child‑Raising Duties, Study Shows
Recent studies reveal that across numerous social species, females frequently care for young that are not theirs, and at times even abandon their own reproduction to assist relatives or fellow group members in raising offspring. This form of cooperative breeding, long noted among birds and mammals, is now being recognized for its widespread occurrence throughout varied animal groups.

Ecologists propose that cooperative breeding likely evolved as an adaptive strategy for erratic environments, where raising a lone litter would be excessively costly. When effort is combined, groups can better withstand predation, disease, and food shortages.
