Drone Attacks on Data Centers Cause Yandex Cloud Outage

Russia's top cloud services firm, Yandex, announced a large‑scale outage following drone strikes that harmed three of its data centers, leading to the closure of two sites and a partial disruption at the remaining one.

Yandex revealed that the attacks inflicted structural harm on essential infrastructure, compelling engineers to suspend activities at the compromised locations to safeguard data integrity and avert additional loss. Consequently, Yandex Cloud customers were unable to reach stored files, virtual machines, and associated services in several regions.

According to Yandex, the impacted data centers sit in the western region of Russia, an area that has experienced increased unmanned aerial system activity over the last year. Although the precise motive for the attacks is still unknown, the firm stressed that the events seem to be isolated incidents, not elements of a larger coordinated cyber operation.

Clients reported being unable to fetch documents, execute workloads, or sync data with Yandex's productivity suite. The disruption, which started late Thursday night, continued into Friday morning, leading the company to release a public statement detailing its recovery strategy and advising users to follow official channels for updates.

Analysts point out that the incident highlights the escalating physical security issues confronting cloud providers, particularly those running extensive data centers in geopolitically tense zones. Dependence on tangible infrastructure means hardware attacks can produce swift, observable impacts on digital services, a threat many operators must now re‑evaluate.

Yandex committed to reinstating complete service promptly, referencing redundant systems and backup locations that will be activated after safety checks are finished. The firm also noted that it is reassessing its security measures, such as improved perimeter monitoring and cooperation with local authorities to prevent future attacks. Users are urged to keep local copies of essential data and to keep track of updates via Yandex's status page for further developments.
