DNA‑Based Project Seeks to Save Britain’s Threatened Black Poplar

A partnership of wildlife charities has kicked off a science‑driven initiative aimed at saving the black poplar—one of the UK's most scarce native trees—by employing DNA testing to steer replanting efforts.

The drive arrives amid a sharp drop in black poplar numbers, caused by past logging, widespread wetland drainage and the transformation of riverside woodlands into farmland. Specialists reckon that only a few hundred mature trees survive in the wild, pushing the species to the edge of regional extinction.

By pulling DNA from the remaining specimens, scientists can chart the current genetic variation and choose seedlings that capture a wide gene pool. This method reduces the risk of inbreeding and gives the newly planted trees a stronger chance of withstanding climate shifts and disease threats.

Ground crews will sow the selected saplings in historically appropriate settings—floodplain forests and riparian strips throughout England, Scotland and Wales. These locations were picked for their ability to link broken‑up populations, facilitating pollen and seed exchange among isolated stands.

Conservation bodies emphasize that the scheme goes beyond mere planting; it is a comprehensive plan that incorporates tracking tree development, evaluating ecological effects, and involving nearby landowners. The effort is underpinned by government grants and private philanthropy, while volunteers are being enlisted to help with site setup and ongoing care.

Should it work, the DNA‑directed restoration could become a template for safeguarding other at‑risk native species. Participants anticipate that the program will not only stop the decline of black poplars but also boost public understanding of the wider issues confronting Britain’s shrinking woodland legacy.
