Deutsche Telekom chief exec questions Starlink Mobile’s chances of becoming a major U.S. carrier

Tim Höttges, chief executive of Deutsche Telekom, told investors on Thursday that while the firm is monitoring Elon Musk’s SpaceX consumer‑focused satellite service plans, he remains skeptical that it will become a ‘major’ U.S. carrier.

Musk’s company intends to roll out Starlink Mobile later this year, using its current low‑Earth‑orbit constellation to beam broadband straight to smartphones and bypass conventional cell towers. The plan pledges country‑wide service, notably in rural and underserved regions, and has sparked interest among analysts who view it as a possible disruptor.

In the earnings call, Höttges described the project as ‘super serious’ and delivered a dry ‘welcome to the party’ remark, underscoring that four established players already dominate the market. He emphasized that any entrant must clear major obstacles before securing a substantial portion of the profitable wireless arena.

Verizon, AT&T, T‑Mobile and Dish currently dominate the U.S. mobile market, each holding extensive spectrum holdings and an expansive tower network. For a satellite‑only offering to succeed, it must obtain extra spectrum, persuade handset manufacturers to adopt the technology, and price its service competitively against the deep‑discount plans the major carriers now offer.

Regulators, especially the Federal Communications Commission, will be pivotal. The pending approval of required spectrum and the capacity to fuse satellite signals with current 5G infrastructure will dictate how fast Starlink Mobile can transition from a pilot to a nationwide launch.

Deutsche Telekom, owner of T‑Mobile US, sees a satellite rival as a factor that could affect future pricing tactics, network‑sharing deals, and investment choices. Its measured stance indicates close monitoring of the rollout, yet it does not anticipate an instant upheaval.

Although Musk’s ambition introduces a fresh twist to the crowded wireless field, industry watchers concur that the climb to ‘major’ status will be arduous. Ultimately, time and regulatory approval will determine if Starlink Mobile can turn its satellite coverage into a viable, large‑scale mobile operation.
