Cologne Police Investigate Robot Used by Teens in Alleged Assault on Minor

Following a complaint from a 16‑year‑old girl, Cologne officials opened a criminal probe into a robot—fitted with a gold chain—that allegedly made contact with her in a way that may amount to sexual assault. Police indicate that two teenagers were behind the robot’s operation.

She told investigators the robot came up to her in a city public space and touched her against her will. The remotely‑piloted device was recognized by its striking gold chain, a feature that allowed police to single it out among the increasing number of bespoke bots built by hobbyists.

Among German teenagers, remote‑controlled robots have turned into a popular hobby, particularly in cities where maker spaces and internet forums support the creation of ever‑more complex machines. Although most builds aim at fun or contests, this case underscores the potential for abuse and sparks debate over supervision and responsible handling.

German legislation treats sexual crimes gravely, no matter the method used. Investigators will examine if the two teens can be charged for conduct executed via the robot, a legal gray zone with scant precedent that is drawing interest as the line between digital and physical actions fades.

Police representatives stressed that the probe remains in its infancy and they have not indicated if charges will be pursued. Detectives are sifting through video recordings, robot logs, and witness testimonies to gauge the scope of the alleged assault and pinpoint the operators.

The matter surfaces amid a Europe‑wide discussion among lawmakers and tech groups about rules for autonomous and remotely‑controlled devices. Whatever the verdict, Cologne’s inquiry may shape future regulations intended to curb comparable misuse of consumer‑level robots and encourage parents and teachers to talk about responsible tech usage with youth.
