Meanwhile, the loss of continuous natural habitats and the homogenisation of agricultural landscapes reduce the availability of the specialized conditions required by rarer, habitat‑restricted species.

Conservationists view the findings as both an opportunity and a warning. The apparent urban suitability for common species suggests that cities could play a larger role in biodiversity strategies, provided green infrastructure is thoughtfully designed and maintained. However, the continued decline of specialist species underscores the importance of preserving and restoring high‑quality natural habitats outside urban zones. Balancing these needs will require coordinated policies that integrate wildlife considerations into land‑use planning, agricultural subsidies, and urban development guidelines.

Policy implications are already emerging. Some European municipalities are exploring “wildlife‑friendly” zoning that protects hedgerows, promotes native planting, and limits pesticide use in public green spaces. Such measures could enhance the ecological value of urban areas for a broader array of species, potentially easing pressure on rural habitats by offering alternative refuges for adaptable fauna.

Future research will aim to refine the understanding of how specific management practices—such as mowing frequency, lighting, and waste management—affect different taxa. By pinpointing the levers that make urban environments more or less hospitable, scientists hope to guide evidence‑based interventions that support both common and threatened wildlife across Europe’s increasingly human‑dominated landscape.
