Scientists have long recorded female chimpanzees and bonobos clutching the remains of their deceased infants for stretches that may last from a few weeks up to several months, a practice known as infant corpse carrying (ICC). First documented in the field many decades ago, this behavior still puzzles researchers as it seems to contradict the survival imperatives of life in the wild.

Observations from a variety of long‑term African study sites describe the same routine: a mother gently grasps, grooms, and at times carries the lifeless youngster, often refusing to let go despite the clear absence of nourishment. The conduct is not confined to a single group; it has been noted in both common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and their close relatives, bonobos (Pan paniscus), indicating it may be a genus‑wide characteristic.

Multiple interpretations have been offered. One perspective stresses the durability of the mother‑infant bond, suggesting that emotional attachment endures beyond death and drives continued care. Another view proposes that the mothers lack a full conceptual grasp of mortality, treating the infant as temporarily incapacitated. Additional theories point to possible social roles—such as broadcasting loss to the troop—or practical motives like hygiene, with the mother perhaps trying to keep parasites away from the corpse.

Although these ideas are numerous, most have yet to undergo systematic, quantitative evaluation. The bulk of the literature rests on anecdotal reports or limited‑sample observations, leaving a divide between descriptive accounts and rigorous scientific testing. The absence of standardized data collection hampers efforts to determine which variables—such as the infant’s age at death or the mother’s reproductive history—most strongly affect the length of ICC.

Current initiatives seek to bridge that gap by assembling larger cross‑site datasets and applying statistical models to pit competing hypotheses against one another. By recording the precise duration mothers retain the bodies, the state of the remains, and associated social actions, researchers aim to discern whether emotional attachment, cognitive misunderstanding, or other factors best explain the pattern.

The ramifications of this work reach beyond primatology. Gaining insight into how non‑human apes react to death can shed light on the evolutionary origins of grief, mourning, and empathy in humans. Should the behavior stem from emotional mechanisms akin to those driving human bereavement, it would offer a rare glimpse into the continuity of affective experience across species.

Future studies are likely to incorporate hormonal profiling, neuroimaging where feasible, and comparative analyses with other mammals that display corpse‑related conduct. As evidence accumulates, the scientific community anticipates moving from mere description toward a clearer understanding of why certain ape mothers cling to their lost infants and what this reveals about the cognitive and emotional capacities of our closest living relatives.
