Bluesky introduces built‑in commerce features to expand earnings beyond ads

Bluesky, the decentralized social platform that originated from a Twitter experiment, said on Tuesday it will incorporate native tools that simplify purchasing, vending and fundraising for its members.

Company executives noted that depending solely on conventional ads is not the sole route to generate revenue. They contend that the protocol’s openness enables multiple alternative income models that are practical and consistent with Bluesky’s principle of user empowerment.

Bluesky opened to the public in early 2023, presenting itself as a challenger to major platforms through a federated design that permits data portability between services. To date, the platform has run without an official advertising model, emphasizing growth driven by its community and a light‑touch moderation strategy.

The forthcoming toolkit is slated to feature built‑in payment links, a streamlined marketplace aimed at creators and small enterprises, and options for direct fundraising like donation buttons or token‑based contributions. Embedding these functions directly into the protocol is intended to reduce technical hurdles for anyone wishing to monetize posts or launch campaigns without exiting the platform.

Analysts point out that a smooth commerce layer might draw a wider spectrum of users—from solo artists and authors to nonprofits looking for grassroots funding. Nevertheless, the introduction also prompts concerns regarding fraud mitigation, financial regulatory compliance, and how monetization could influence moderation decisions.

Bluesky intends to roll out the functionalities gradually, collecting input from early users prior to a broader launch. Executives say the trial will reveal if a varied revenue mix can keep the service afloat without turning to intrusive ads, a shift that may shape how other social networks approach monetization in the future.
