Biotech‑Derived Glue Provides Eco‑Friendly Substitute for Petroleum‑Based Hot‑Melt Adhesives

Researchers at South Korea's Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have demonstrated that genetically engineered microbes can turn basic sugars into a polymer that works as a hot‑melt adhesive, offering a potential replacement for glues derived from petroleum in numerous consumer and industrial applications.

Hot‑melt adhesives (HMAs) stay solid at ambient temperature and liquefy when heated, enabling fast bonding in fields such as packaging, furniture production, electronics assembly, and automotive manufacturing. Most of these adhesives are currently produced from petrochemical feedstocks, a practice that adds to greenhouse‑gas emissions and links the sector to unstable oil prices.

In the KAIST experiment, a bacterial strain was altered to divert glucose—a widely available carbohydrate—into a polymer chain that mirrors the melt‑flow and sticking properties of traditional HMAs. The team showed that the microbially generated material can be melted, applied, and cured under the same temperature regime used for commercial glues, while maintaining comparable bond strength.

By obtaining the feedstock from renewable biomass instead of crude oil, the method promises a reduced carbon footprint and the chance to embed adhesive production within existing biorefineries. If brought to scale, it could assist manufacturers in meeting tighter sustainability goals and lessen reliance on fossil fuels.

The investigators note that transitioning from a laboratory proof‑of‑concept to full‑scale manufacturing will demand improvements in fermentation yields, cost‑effective downstream processing, and adherence to safety and performance regulations. Nevertheless, industry analysts view the breakthrough as a concrete step toward greener manufacturing, and several companies have already shown interest in conducting pilot‑scale trials.
