Apple Says Holiday Foldable iPhone Duo May Not Meet Demand
Apple announced on Tuesday that it cannot assure a consistent supply of its new foldable iPhone Duo ahead of the Christmas shopping period, even though overall iPhone sales for the quarter remain strong.
The firm explained that “constraints” within its supply chain are restricting how many Duo units can reach retailers before the end of the year. This umbrella term covers everything from component shortages to production bottlenecks that have arisen as Apple scales up its first foldable handset.
Analysts had projected the iPhone Duo—Apple’s debut in the foldable arena—to act as a holiday‑season catalyst after a solid launch in the United States and Europe. Its novelty and premium price tag positioned it as a potentially high‑margin offering for the quarter, yet the supply‑side issues mean many stores could run out of stock well before peak shopping days.
Apple’s wider iPhone lineup continues to post strong results, with the company noting “strong sales” across its standard and Pro models. The earnings release highlighted record‑breaking demand for the latest iPhone 15 series, which has helped offset worries about the Duo’s limited availability. Still, the shortfall in foldable units could hamper Apple’s chance to capture a larger slice of the premium holiday market.
Observers point out that the foldable market remains a niche compared with conventional smartphones, though it is expanding quickly as competitors such as Samsung and Huawei broaden their portfolios. Apple’s foray was widely viewed as a test of consumer interest in higher‑priced, flexible devices, and the present supply constraints may postpone a clear read on that interest until after the holidays.
Looking forward, Apple said it is collaborating with its manufacturing partners to clear the bottlenecks and aims to boost Duo shipments in the new year. No precise timeline has been given for when inventory levels will normalize, leaving retailers and shoppers to contend with uncertainty as they plan holiday purchases.
