Apple Adds Real‑Time Alerts: Live Activities Now Visible on iPhone and CarPlay

Apple introduced an easy method for iPhone users to enable Live Activities and display them on CarPlay, providing continuous, glance‑at‑a‑glance updates from preferred apps without needing to unlock the phone.

First launched with iOS 16, Live Activities are dynamic widgets that show up on the lock screen and, on supported models, within the Dynamic Island. They present time‑critical data—like sports scores, ride‑share status, food‑delivery progress, or flight information—in a form that updates automatically as the source data changes.

To activate it, users open Settings, tap Notifications, scroll the app list, and find the Live Activities switch for each app they want to track. After turning it on, a tiny badge appears on the app’s icon to signal active Live Activities, and the lock screen starts presenting the real‑time feed whenever pertinent information is present.

When an iPhone is paired with a CarPlay‑compatible car, those Live Activities are duplicated on the vehicle’s infotainment display. CarPlay automatically retrieves the active widgets, though drivers may check the CarPlay Settings to ensure Allow Notifications is enabled for the chosen apps. Beyond the iPhone setup, no further actions are needed; the system syncs the data instantly.

The advantage is obvious: travelers can monitor a taxi’s arrival, watch a delivery approach, or follow a game’s score without looking at their phone. By presenting vital updates in an unobtrusive visual strip, Apple hopes to curb the urge to unlock the device while driving, supporting its wider safety goals.

Live Activities also reflect Apple’s answer to the rising call for richer, always‑on information feeds that rival Android’s widget landscape. Built on Apple’s ActivityKit framework, the feature lets developers craft custom timelines that iOS renders efficiently. Early participants—including major sports leagues, food‑delivery firms, and ride‑hailing services—have already incorporated the functionality.

Looking forward, analysts predict Apple will expand Live Activities to a wider range of third‑party apps and maybe bring the experience to watchOS and macOS. As developers fine‑tune their offerings, users can look forward to a more personalized array of real‑time alerts that remain visible on both the iPhone lock screen and the CarPlay dashboard, making daily information more reachable without sacrificing safety.
