American Express Says Mobile App Glitch Caused Recent Outage, Not a Security Incident

American Express stated that the latest disruptions to its mobile application and online banking service were due to a technical fault, dispelling early rumors that the downtime could have compromised customer information.

The problems, which started earlier this week, prevented many cardholders from signing in, checking balances, or processing transactions. Users encountered error prompts and unusually long loading periods, sparking a flood of grievances across social media and consumer discussion boards.

In a short statement, the financial‑services firm explained that its internal review eliminated any breach or exploit as the source of the service decline. Although it affirmed the problem was technical, Amex refrained from revealing the exact cause, indicating that further details were still being collected.

Analysts observe that such outages may arise from multiple factors, such as software updates that hit unexpected bugs, server capacity limits during high traffic, or issues with third‑party infrastructure providers. The absence of a clear explanation has spurred additional speculation among users, many of whom remain concerned about possible exposure of sensitive account data.

American Express serves as a pillar of the worldwide payments network, handling billions of dollars in transactions annually. Even brief service lapses can affect merchants, disturb cash flow, and weaken consumer trust, particularly as expectations for digital banking reliability continue to rise.

The firm indicated it will keep a close watch on its systems, implement any required patches, and update customers as further information emerges. Regulators usually monitor extended or recurring outages at major banks, but no formal investigations have been announced so far.
