Amazon to Phase Out Fire Tablets, Introducing Android‑Powered Alexa Devices

Amazon disclosed that it will end production of its Fire tablet range and replace it with a new lineup called Alexa Tablets. The announcement was confirmed by Panos Panay, Amazon's head of consumer electronics, in a Bloomberg interview, where he said the decision stems from customer demand for a more open and familiar operating system.

The upcoming devices will run a standard Android build instead of Amazon's proprietary Fire OS. By adopting this mainstream platform, users will gain unrestricted access to the Google Play Store—a capability that the Fire series lacked due to its reliance on Amazon's curated app ecosystem.

First launched more than a decade ago, Fire tablets have been marketed as low‑cost alternatives to mainstream tablets and are tightly integrated with Amazon services such as Prime Video, Kindle and the Alexa voice assistant. While they have appealed to price‑sensitive shoppers, critics have highlighted their limited app selection and performance gaps compared with competing Android and iOS offerings.

Industry analysts interpret the shift as part of Amazon’s broader effort to solidify its presence in the fiercely competitive tablet market. Aligning its hardware with the Android ecosystem is intended to attract consumers who want Alexa’s convenience without sacrificing a full app store, and it may also simplify software development and support by consolidating around a single, widely adopted operating system.

Amazon has not revealed a timeline for retiring the Fire line or the precise specifications of the forthcoming Alexa Tablets. However, Panay indicated that the new models are designed to meet the expectations of users who have been calling for a more open platform. The move suggests Amazon will continue to leverage its cloud services and voice‑assistant capabilities while delivering a more conventional tablet experience, a combination that could reshape its standing in the consumer electronics arena.
