Amazon Rolls Out Text‑Message Shopping for Alexa After Muse Removal

Amazon disclosed that it plans to let millions of shoppers place orders via plain text messages to Alexa, a step that comes after the firm recently barred the third‑party Muse application from its service.

Muse, an add‑on for voice assistants that enabled users to engage Alexa through an alternate interface, was taken down after Amazon alleged breaches of its policies concerning data management and user‑experience guidelines. The takedown ignited discussion among developers regarding Alexa’s ecosystem openness, yet it also paved the way for Amazon to concentrate on its proprietary chat‑based shopping solutions.

With the upcoming feature, shoppers can text a dedicated Alexa number, list the products they’re after, and get back suggestions, price comparisons, and order confirmations all within the same message thread. The tool utilizes the identical natural‑language processing that drives Alexa’s voice interactions, but it targets scenarios where vocal commands are inconvenient, like noisy settings or during meetings.

Market analysts view the launch as Amazon’s bid to tap a wider slice of the mobile commerce arena, where chat‑driven shopping has taken off on services such as WhatsApp and WeChat. Concurrently, privacy groups are expected to examine how the text data will be retained and utilized, considering Amazon’s vast retail data repositories.

Amazon states that the texting function will roll out to “millions of users” in the coming weeks, with a phased regional rollout and incorporation into the current Alexa app. While exact launch timelines and pricing remain undisclosed, the firm anticipates the offering will augment voice‑based shopping and cement Alexa’s position as a primary hub for consumer buying.
