Airbnb Bans Hosts From Asking Guests to Wash Dishes
Airbnb has unveiled a new rule that prevents hosts from demanding that short‑term guests perform tasks usually done by professional cleaners, beginning with the most frequent ask—washing dishes.
The amendment follows a surge of traveler grievances that they were required to leave the kitchen immaculate despite having already paid a cleaning fee. According to the updated policy, any duty that a contracted cleaning crew would normally handle is no longer deemed a reasonable request of guests.
Airbnb representatives said the initiative aims to draw a sharper line between the paid‑for services offered via the platform and what is expected of the guest. By tightening the definition of “reasonable requests,” the firm hopes to lessen conflict and make sure the advertised price matches the service level delivered.
Reactions from hosts have been mixed. A segment views the regulation as an unwarranted meddling in their property‑management practices, claiming they depend on guests to speed up turnover. Conversely, some hosts appreciate the clarification, pointing out that it shields them from bad reviews that stem from guests feeling used as unpaid cleaners.
For guests, the change eliminates a gray area that has occasionally sparked uncomfortable disputes. Travelers can now reserve accommodations with increased confidence that the cleaning fee they pay truly covers the post‑stay cleanup, without any extra labor expected of them.
Airbnb states it will oversee adherence via its review mechanism and will act against listings that persist in demanding prohibited tasks. This rule forms part of a wider push by the platform to harmonize expectations and may set a benchmark for other short‑term rental operators to follow.
